SMD AUTOMOTIVE is an automotive maintenance and repair centre located in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. The company was founded in 1996 by Rob Sustarsic. The original service bays were located at the Husky gas station in Whistler’s Creekside. SMD quickly outgrew their small two bay facility and relocated to the site of the old Whistler brewery in Function Junction in 2002. Two years later we would move once more to our present location with the addition of two new partners Jim Longden and Gregory Dennie.

We are dedicated to vehicles running at peak performance levels in an effort to keep emissions down to minimal levels for the health of our environment. Forward thinking, utilizing the newest in technologies, and providing our staff with the latest in training and equipment, we endeavor to be and provide the best at what we do.

SMD AUTOMOTIVE STAFF

Rob Sustarsic Originally from London Ontario, Rob came to Whistler in 1991 to ski with some close friends for the season. His automotive background came from Subaru, Saab and Mazda dealerships. He now enjoys living in Whistler with his spouse Patty and two daughters Jelena and Emily.

Jim Longden Jim has a very active Whistler lifestyle, between his family, Karen, Kali and Winston, he shares his time playing hockey, skiing and mountain biking. Jim has an extensive knowledge base in the automotive repair industry that makes him one of our greatest assets. His 20 years of experience in the vehicle repair industry in Whistler, has given Jim unique insights into the needs of vehicles in Whistler and their harsh environments.

Kate Hoffmann Kate has had Whistler in her blood all her life. Her mother and father were Whistler locals in seventies when they met. Growing up in the lower mainland, she started her skiing career at the age of two, coming up to Whistler on the weekends. She has now come full circle and has made Whistler her home. Kate’s dedication and loyalty is unparalleled, paired with her true empathy and caring for our client’s well being, make her an indispensable member of our core team.

Peter Rosza Peter has been coming to Whistler to snowboard since 1994 as member of a ski club cabin. After 4 years he decided to make it his home along with a fellow cabin member Amy, with whom he is the very proud father of a son, Jacob. His broad range of knowledge in vehicle repair and attention to detail makes him a very worthy member of our team.

Derek Jarman Derek moved to Whistler in 1999 to escape the hectic Vancouver lifestyle. Looking for a balance between small town living and a healthy environment to raise his daughter, Odessa, he choose Whistler as the perfect match. In keeping close to his family roots in Vancouver, he comes from an automotive oriented family; his father and brother are also in the repair industry. Derek has a very well rounded and robust career in the automotive field, working in different areas of the industry, with exotic imports at MCL motor cars to domestic vehicles at Brown Brothers Ford. It was very obvious to us that Derek possessed an uncanny natural ability towards automobile servicing and a learning capacity that is outstanding.

Richard Hornbrook Rick came to Whistler in 2004 from Nanaimo. Following his brother footsteps, he came to whistler for his passion of snowboarding with his girlfriend Laurie. Successfully graduating at the top of his class at Malaspina University- College in an automotive pre apprenticeship course, Rick was able to continue his career goal of becoming an automotive technician at our facility, and we are very pleased with his progress. He is also very active in the sport of longboarding, competing at an international level.

Dale Lachance Dale, (aka Elvis), came to British Columbia from Sudbury Ontario in 1995. One of our newer members on staff, he brings experience from Acura and Ford Dealerships. On his time off he can be found singing and playing his guitar in local entertainment establishments.
